"It was pretty groundbreaking at the time for W. K. L. Dickson to attempt creating a narrative film in eight different episodes telling the story of Rip van Winkle. And since the multi-scene film hadn't been invented yet, it would be silly to blame the director for the disjointed look of each segment. The end result, while not exactly well-told, does a fairly good job with storytelling and works quite well for 1896. This film was incorporated into the compilation film Rip Van Winkle (1896), which is in the 3-disk boxed DVD set called "More Treasures from American Film Archives, 1894-1931" (2004), compiled by the National Film Preservation Foundation from 5 American film archives. It was restored by the Library of Congress from its paper print collection, has a running time of about 25 seconds, and an added piano music score.
