"Even in his film debut at the age of 20, Cedric Hardwicke (who went on to be knighted) was as ugly as he was in later films. He was better playing the villain rather than a leading protagonist. I didn't believe the romantic interest in him because he wasn't pleasant to look at for any amount of time. There's no doubt that he is a good actor, but playing romantic parts is suspending belief too far. His good voice did not come through this film because sound was not discovered as yet.
