Fred Mace is the station agent of a railroad at a small town. His daughter is in love with the son of the cashier at the mill, while he himself is the adored of an old maid. The cashier meanwhile has answered a matrimonial advertisement and in response receives a letter and picture of Billie Brockwell, followed in due time by the lady herself. The cashier shows her through the mill and incidentally displays the large amount of money which is in his care. She urges him to take it and elope with her, and he agrees to do so. To avoid suspicion she suggests that he go on an earlier train. In the confusion of starting he takes the wrong grip and when the holdup men who have received the tip to rob him search the grip they find that it does not contain the money. Miss Brockwell discovers the mix up in the grips and summons the prospective robbers. The cashier enlists the aid of the police and follows them. There is a stirring chase and a running fight between the crooks in an auto and the pursuers on a railroad engine. The crooks arrive first by taking a short cut and rob the mill safe. Mace and the old maid, who have followed out of curiosity, are bound and gagged. The son of the cashier is tied to a machine that carries his body slowly toward a big crusher. The crooks even turn on their chief, Miss Brockwell. and then endeavor to make their escape by a bucket line across the canyon. The station agent's daughter, riding to the mill, finds that the desperadoes have blown up all the bridges, but she makes a thrilling leap into the water with her horse, breaks through the doors of the mill and saves everyone from the flames which are now roaring through the structure. The police posse across the canyon captures the crooks one by one as they come over the wire in buckets.
