On the High Card (1921) is one of the earliest films linked to what would later become the Pecos Bill legend. Tex O'Reilly wrote the screenplay and appears in the film as Hank Saunders, a lawman. In the same year, he played Pecos Bill in West of the Rio Grande (1921). Two years later, O'Reilly introduced Pecos Bill in literature as a supposed folk hero in the short story The Saga of Pecos Bill, published in The Century Magazine in October 1923.
