Here&apos;s another of those city portrait movies that were popular in the 1920s, films like MANHATTA and MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA. Here the subject is Montreal in Quebec.

I&apos;ve been to Montreal and it&apos;s a fine city, even if they are deranged in their insistence that they have the best bagels. This movie gives no such impression. Instead, it has an air of desperation about it, as if someone was given an optical printer and told to make Montreal look like a good place to hold a Shriner&apos;s convention. And so we get images of the stock market, and of people typing furiously at something, and waving goodbye at the docks, and then half-dressed chorus girls in either large numbers or optically printed many times.
