"There must have been a railroad line running through the site of the Autry episodes because my only memory of the show has to do with Gene boxing with Denver Pyle on a moving freight train. And Pat Buttram played the requisite moronic sidekick. I thought that part would have been dropped after the parody in Along Came Jones where William Demarest was mistakenly referred to as Monte's idiot uncle. The character remained and Roy Rogers had his Pat Brady and Hopalong Cassidy had Edgar Buchanan. I guess Tonto was supposed to fill that role, but he seemed more ept than the others. And, unlike ..."

💡 Did You Know?

Two-thirds of the way through the first season's production, Pat Buttram was severely injured in an explosion and was hospitalized for several months. In order to complete the production run, his sidekick role was filled in the remaining episodes by Chill Wills, Fuzzy Knight and Alan Hale Jr.. Wills and Knight wore the same costume as Buttram so that long shots of stock footage could be easily used, but there was no disguising Hale's bulk - he wore his own distinctive clothing.
