"The Academy Award-nominated "3rd Ave. El" consists of footage of the New York subway traveling in various areas to the tune of Joseph Haydn's "Concerto in D for Harpsichord". All this footage makes it look like one impressive experience. If my city had a subway, I can guarantee you that I'd ride it as much as possible (obviously not that much right now with COVID-19). I suspect that the various people captured in the footage - including the little girl - had no idea that the short would get nominated for an Oscar, or that we'd be able to watch it online all ..."
💡 Did You Know?
The initial Third Avenue Elevated Line route from South Ferry to Grand Central Station opened in August 1878. The northern portion of the route terminated in the Bronx and was completed in 1920. Sections of the line eventually closed within the borough of Manhattan between 1950 and 1955. The Bronx section was abandoned in 1973 and demolished in 1977.
