"At a telephone exchange in Rome, five of the operators try to get their work done -- well, most of them -- while taking care of their lives outside work. It's basically five stories of courtships with the telephone exchange working as the common thread among the tales. One girl has a child, one is pursued by numerous men, one tries to persuade Peppino De Filippo to marry her -- that's the comic story -- and so forth. It's a bit diffuse -- in the Hollywood equivalent, there would typically be three stories -- but it's a nice assemblage of working-class women and their lives..."
