"I thoroughly enjoyed this picture when I saw it fairly recently (probably on TPTV in the UK). I found it a fascinating variant on the WWII POW theme with a splendid ensemble cast and, as some other reviewers have mentioned, the less usual setting of an Italian rather than German camp. The film is based on 'Death in Captivity' by Michael Gilbert first published in 1952 but now easily available through a recent reprint in the excellent 'British Library Crime Classics' series. Gilbert had been a POW in Italy himself so the novel has a very authentic atmosphere. The film, perh..."

💡 Did You Know?

Amongst the names called out in the roll call scene when Captain Long returns from Benucci's office is 'Verity'. Yorkshire and England cricketer Hedley Verity, who served as a captain in the Green Howards, was captured in Italy and died there while he was a POW. It's a sufficiently unusual surname to be more than coincidence.
