The three cases faced by officer Antonio Saracino ( Totò ) were inspired by real cases. The case of inspector Giuseppe Mastrillo ( Nino Taranto ) is inspired by the case of inspector Cesare Mastrella, who managed a fraud to the Italian state of 750,150,000 lire in 1962. The case of the poisoned drink is inspired by the case of a man who was killed by a poisoned bitter sent by his wife's lover in August 1962. The case of inspector La Matta ( Erminio Macario ) cites the famous case of Henri Landru, a Frenchman who killed at least ten rich and lonely women in the beginning of the 20th century.
