The screenplay changes in relation to the original story were part of Lopes Barbosa's strategy to make the film acceptable to the Portuguese censors: the white Portuguese foreman became a black man, and the land owner and his family became English speaking colonists. Yet, the workers short-lived revolt was more explicit than in the original story, according to Barbosa's vision of the historical evolution during the ten years since Luís Bernardo Honwana had written it.
