"Because the meshing of fantasy and mecha genre never takes off for real, you always have the feeling that the two things are thrown into another one for no reason other than someone dictated it (which is what happened). The fantasy setting is never truly explored, being limited to some tinkerbells and a bunch of monsters that attack the main heroes, and the story (interesting in the first 20 or so episodes) eventually completely demolishes that because by the end the series has 100% turned into pure sci-fi. The characters are not very memorable either. The mecha design, on the other hand, is c..."
