Leo Meister (Carl Heinz Schroth) lives and works as a painter and painting restorer in Italy on Lake Orta. By chance he meets the much younger Lena Jordanus (Simone Rethel). As it turns out, she is the daughter of the renowned art expert Prof. Jordanus (Peter Pasetti). 50 years earlier, Prof. Jordanus had criticized an exhibition of paintings by Leo Meister in a newspaper review. Meister then gave up painting his own pictures and has since limited himself to painting holiday motifs in the style of famous painters. Together with Lena, who wants to teach her father a lesson for personal reasons, a momentous plan is hatched: Leo is supposed to forge a Rubens and then have the painting examined by Prof. Jordanus. Both hope that the self-proclaimed Rubens expert will fall for the forgery and thus be exposed to the public. Milanese gallery owner Stefan May (Michael Lesch) is brought on board as an intermediary between Leo and Professor Jordanus. Lena had a brief holiday affair with him months earlier. In fact, Professor Jordanus's painting is declared to be genuine at an exhibition. When Leo tries to resolve the matter, he scribbles his name on the painting with a felt-tip pen to prove the worthlessness of his forgery. To avoid losing his reputation as a Rubens expert, Jordanus sticks to his version that the painting is genuine. While Leo is brought to court, May now wants to sell the painting as an original for millions. However, Leo's innocence is quickly established in court.
