I watched &quot;Miedzy ustami a brzegiem pucharu&quot; (Between the lips and the rim of the cup) with some curiosity. The acting was decent, the costumes were good, and the plot lively. But despite everything, this sentimental story for our great-grandmothers that was happening in the world of people of noble birth left me emotionally uninvolved. And I also had a problem with the credibility of the character played by Jacek Chmielnik. Maria Rodziewiczowna, the author of the novel on which the film was based, was a marginal figure in Polish literature, and Czeslaw Milosz does not mention her in his book &quot;The History of Polish Literature&quot;. I have read in Wikipedia that Maria Rodziewiczowna came from the Polish gentry; her estate was in the area ruled by Tsarist Russia, she was friendly to her peasants, was a lesbian, and was an ardent Catholic and patriot. I suspect that she moved the plot of her novel to Greater Poland because of Tsarist censors. Well, I come from simple folks; I am not religious, and I am friendly towards every nationality. Any discussions about Polishness, Spanishness, or Albanianness are just empty chatter for me. &quot;Between the lips and the rim of the cup&quot; gave me a glimpse into the world of noble-born Poles over a hundred years ago, only to be glad that this world is gone.
