Making Ends Meet

A critique of Hollywood

Ron Sullivan (a/k/a Henri Pachard) wrote and directed this drama about making mainstream movies versus being stuck shooting porn, a somewhat personal diatribe often launched from the pornographer&apos;s point-of-view. It&apos;s well-acted but hardly convincing.

He casts John Leslie in the starring role as a crass, hissable Hollywood producer who is throwing a party at his mansion. Low-rent pornographer Peter North is invited, and North&apos;s pal, a struggling porn actor played by Robert Bullock, gets North to get him a gig as the caterer in order to attend and meet a mainstream director who&apos;s attending (played by Joey Silvera).

At the party, Leslie humiliates Bullock after he finds out the caterer is actually just a porno stud, and challenges Robert to f*ck one of the guests in front of everybody. If he does, he&apos;ll be hired to act in a real movie for John. Bullock does, with volunteer Alicia Monet, and Leslie declares cynically: &quot;Hooray for Hollywood&quot;.

Also starring Angel Kelly, as John Leslie&apos;s Black mistress, who he insists serve as a &quot;maid&quot; at his party, representing hypocrisy in the mainstream world.

The depiction of the lowly porn player as a hero, wanting to desperately graduate to working in the unscrupulous world of mainstream filmmaking is in your face here, not exactly an expose worthy of a Billy Wilder. Definitely a case of sour grapes on the part of Sullivan, who made a career dating back to the softcore 1960s of directing many fine porn movies, but clearly aspired to bigger and better assignments.
