"Since Liberace died in 1987 and this movie was released a year later, it has the appearance and feel of something that was thrown together for a ratings grab. Vincent Garber certainly tries his best to capture Liberace and (for the most part) has his voice and mannerisms down, but it tends to sanitize and minimize the gay aspects of his life. The actor playing Scott Thorsen tries too hard and acts and looks ridiculous; he was miscast and adds very little other than a silly looking blonde wig. Watch the 2013 film Behind the Candelabra with Michael Douglas and Matt Damon instead...."

Liberace never publicly acknowledged his homosexuality, remaining closeted until his 1987 death. Victor Garber, who plays Liberace in this movie, was also closeted at the time of filming (the late 1980s), but by the early 2010s, he had come out in the press. In 2015, Garber married Canadian artist and model Rainer Andreesen; the couple had dated since 2000.
