"So funny. A little rascal putting a Swedish village ablaze. Verbally speaking. --- Or is it funny ? Because Emil (in German: Michel) is - in brutal honesty - another pet. Predating E. T. the Extraterrestrial pet from another planet by a decade. Astrid Lindgren gave Stephen Spielberg that dehumanising idea. Watch a little pet boy do all sorts of shenanigans, that adults will find funny in the end. Like getting his head stuck in a soup ceramic. Am I harsh in my judgement ? No. Because I saw people getting children just to have one of those Emils. Isn't that what life is all about ? (Because..."

While the TV series was first broadcast in West Germany in 1973, that was dubbed in German. The original Swedish version (with the few German actors dubbed into Swedish) wasn't broadcast until 1975-76, when the three movies it's edited from had been shown in theaters.
