This is one of the simplest of the Lumieres&apos; earliest works: two babies sit on a rug, picking up and shaking various toys. That&apos;s all that happens.

Although it isn&apos;t a great picture by Lumiere standards, it&apos;s still a very typical example of their efforts to expand what they already knew -- still photography -- into something that could handle movement aesthetically. Given that baby portraits are still a popular photograph -- I&apos;ve got pictures of very young relatives all over my refrigerator -- how could they not try to do something? 

Unfortunately, given the need to keep the kids in the frame meant that there couldn&apos;t be much in the way of interesting motion unless the children decided to do it themselves. I doubt they took direction very well.
