It is a historical drama setting forth the sufferings of the Jews in Poland during the reign of King Casimir, a just, warm-hearted, but violent-tempered man. Through the machinations of one of his noblemen, who bears the Jews a grudge, he is persuaded to order a wholesale execution of them and exile of the entire people. A very pretty love story is woven into this main theme. The various personages are well characterized, particularly the Count and Esther's father.
