My Son the Bride

Gay Life in the South African Townships

In this documentary we get a glimpse of gay life in the townships of South Africa. While the new South African constitution guarantees rights to people of all sexual preferences as well as to all races, attitudes sometimes don&apos;t change as rapidly as the laws. 

In this film we meet a very effeminant man who wishes to take a husband. The brides mother is NOT very understanding and at one point scalds him with a pot of boiling cooking oil. 

The mother is not charged with a crime but the rest of the family does get involved and helps to mediate the dispute. While none are happy with the situation there does seem to be a level of acceptance among the rest of the family even to the point of agreeing to the wedding. (Provided the groom can pay the bride price) 

Once past the difficulties the film concerns itself with the preparations for the wedding and its as if the bride were a woman by birth.

 While NOT a classic documentary this film does give you an unaltered view of what it must be like to be in this country at this time.
