The Wordless Message

George Osborne, leaving gaol at the end of his sentence for embezzlement, writes to his sister, who has married, and asks her to assist him without letting her husband know. The husband, John Gaston, is rendered suspicious by his wife's refusal to allow him to read the letter. He sees Osborne enter the house, and watches the affectionate meeting of the brother and sister. Jumping to the conclusion that the visitor is a lover, he leaves a scornful message that he never wishes to see his wife again. The wife sends a pitiful note to her husband. Gaston tears up the letter unread, but later receives another card. There is only a chord of music. John takes out the violin, and as he plays the chord he realizes that it is from "The Messiah," and the accompanying words "For unto us a son is born" flash into his mind. He catches the first train home. On the steps of his house he encounters the stranger, but the other reveals his true identity, and Gaston enters the house, to find he has not misread the message.
