"Paul Terry and Frank Moser produce a fine, serious late silent cartoon by largely going the von Sternberg route as honest mice fight for love despite the depredation of the cat gangsters. They accomplish this by some very clever use of the standard rubber tube animation of the era to indicate the mice' small size and by extensive use of large buildings in the background, all slightly misshapen, indicating their scale. There are the usual number of decently executed gags here, but they largely serve to advance the plot and actually are atmospherically threatening, rather than flat out fun..."
