Van Beuren had already made some sound cartoons when this one came out and it seems peculiar that it was released as a silent -- perhaps the small budgets that he gave Paul Terry and his staff meant this one was planned as a sound cartoon but it was cheaper to make it this way and represent the music by notes.

Given that degree of puzzlement hanging over this production, it doesn&apos;t feel particularly good, although it is a perfectly decent &quot;Aesop&apos;s Fables&quot; silent effort, with good gags, despite the usual economies that belie its cheapness: the repetitive action that could be performed by simply printing a piece of film more than once; the characters in the foreground that never move and the background work that is clearly repeated over and over again.

None of these were uncommon for the series, so probably the most accurate assessment is that if you enjoy most of the series, you&apos;ll enjoy this one.
