&quot;Manga: Sakana no kuni&quot; is a Japanese cartoon whose style looks quite similar to the cartoons Terry Gilliam did for the &quot;Monty Python&quot; TV show....but in black &amp; white and without sound. The cartoon tells a story that has an obvious nationalistic message which would seem to lay the groundwork for the country&apos;s invasion of Manchuria just two years later.

This cartoon is set in the ocean. All the ocean life is afraid of the big, mean whales. These whales kill and destroy and the sea life around them appears doomed. Later, the fish and other sea creatures work together to destroy the whales. But the, with their guards down, they are sitting ducks for the fisherman...at which point the film ends with the motto &quot;Remain vigilant after victory&quot;.

The biggest problem with this cartoon is its blatant and obvious message. And, to make the message stick, the cartoon is anything but kid friendly---with some rather savage looking whales being torn apart! Subtle, it sure isn&apos;t....and the film, as a result, isn&apos;t a lot of fun to watch. Fair animation and a weak and obvious story.
