"Compressing a book with so many themes in it into just three 30 minute episodes was always going to be quite a challenge, and so it proved to be. Yet I know when I first saw this when was around the same age as Tom is I loved it, so perhaps for the target audience of the time three episodes was enough. And it certainly got me to go out an read the actual book. Despite feeling rushed the series does capture the feel of the book, though the ending is different - exchanging the skating trip for a boat trip and miss out out Ely altogether - but I assume that was down to cost!
