"Checkmate's client in this story is the committee running the fictitious Pioneer Bowl Committee standing in for the real live Rose Bowl. It seems as though one of the two grand marshals in the parade is being threatened. Soon some real substantive incidents occur. Jack Benny playing a Jack Benny like comedian named Jack Bowen is one of the marshals. He's getting some threats and there are some attempts at killing him.
