On 24 Feb 1852, Roy Bean (c.1825-1903) and Scotsman John Collins had a pistol-shooting match on horseback, shooting at each other. Collins was wounded on his right arm, and both men were arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder. In the two months that he was in jail, Bean received many gifts of flowers, food, wine, and cigars from women. Hidden in the final gifts were knives that were hidden in tamales; he used the knives to dig through the cell wall and escaped on 17 Apr 1852.
