"Gomer has to lead drills, and he's not very good at it until his grandpa gives him an emblem. It's funny, when grandpa, played by Norris Goff visits Sergeant Carter and gets Gomer a second chance. I'm just glad Gomer returned to TV after a hiatus . It ranks with Dennis The Menace as one of the best comedy series. This movie is also a good look at the importance of family. No wonder Gomer is intimidated by the task considering the admiration he has for Vince. Gomer doesn't even want a turn at leading. Jim Nabors and Frank Sutton make a great comedy team. And a lot of people ..."

Grandpa Pyle (Norris Goff) refers to "Colonel Teddy" at San Juan Hill in the Spanish American War, which was in 1898. He is referring to Theodore Roosevelt who famously led the "Rough Riders" to victory at the Battle of San Juan Hill, Cuba in 1898.
