Harry Enfield stated that the tourist characters of "Sergei and Vincent" were invented purely to give Paul chance to play a Dutch character in the series, but were quickly dropped.
In 1997's "Harry Enfield and his Humorous Chums", he recalled of later characters from Harry Enfield and Chums (1994): "The Dutch Coppers could be characters on The Fast Show. Paul has been doing his brilliant Dutch accent for years and I've always wanted to be able to use it somewhere. We tried Paul's Dutchman before a couple of years ago, as a young tourist with his Russian friend (me) who liked 'guitar-based rock - wow! It is sho goot!'. The characters got a mixed response from the studio audience, so we never did them again. [...] I was also concerned that my Russian had been the cause of the failure of our previous attempt to launch Paul's Dutchman, so this time I made sure I kept my gob shut and let Paul do his stuff without my less accomplished interference."
