Hogan and his crew come up with the deception of a Rocket Gun in order to divert the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) and alleviate the bombing of England, and London in particular, during the Battle of Britain. The Battle of Britain lasted from approximately September 7, 1940 until May 11, 1941. From September 7, 1940 London was systematically bombed by the Luftwaffe for 56 out of the following 57 days and nights.
