The show was originally going to be known as "The Surreal World", but MTV was angry over this because the combination of the show's "strangers living together in a house" theme and the title were rip-offs of the long-running MTV reality show hit "The Real World". VH1 asked MTV if keeping the theme and renaming the show "The Surreal Life" would be a fair solution, and MTV said yes.
