January the 22nd, 1879: the Battle of Isandlwana in today's South Africa, the British army suffers its most humiliating defeat. Extraordinary military blunders allows Zulus, most armed with just spears, to crush a modern British army. Yet this day goes down as one of our finest, for later that same day a much smaller and less significant British victory is won eight miles away at Rorke's Drift - the basis for the film "Zulu". Those at the summit of power claim this is the major battle shielding the culprits responsible for the earlier disaster.
