Although the election for Calverton is a local election, and this episode originally aired on Sunday, 4 November 1956, it can be presumed that the election in the show and its importance to all concerned was a nod to the upcoming Constitutionally mandated national election that occurs in the U.S. every two years on the first Tuesday of November. In 1956, deciding among other significant political contests, voters re-elected the Republicant Party President Dwight D. Eisenhower to his second term in office. He ran against and defeated, for the second time, the Democratic Party challenger Adlai Stevenson.
