As the new artistic and managing director at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, Göran Gentele made a lot of changes. In most cases necessary but also popular adjustments. So after having had six successful years in the house, he expected a prolongation of his contract. But this was 1968 with student revolts all over Europe. The Royal Opera was beseiged by radicals. The Minister of Education was hiding. Till the COB Seved Apelqvist demanded a renewal of Gentels's contract. Thus happened and Göran Gentele stayed till the mighty Metropolitan Opera House of New York knocked on his door.
