1977. Right after graduating from a pedagogical institute, energetic and inspired Katya goes to work to one of the remote military garrisons. However there is no vacancy for her in the local school. The division commander General Kuzin tries to send her back home. He has already had his hands full - hero pilot Chukin landed the military fighter during a training flight to meet his fiancee Yulia, Kuzin's daughter. Now Kuzin is threatened with dismissal, and the division may be headed by his deputy martinet Prikhodko. However Katya refuses to leave. Then Kuzin offers her to work at a switchboard instead. From this moment, life of the division changes dramatically. And it all starts when a district commander comes to the garrison with a newspaper correspondent. The commander is Kuzin's friend, and is ready to do everything to fix his problems. The correspondent is supposed to make a positive report on the achievements of Kuzin's division. But a fatal error occurs. The article is published with a photo of Kuzin and Katya, where she is mistakenly called his bride.
