When George and Evelyn marry, it is not in the happiest of circumstances. But in an ordinary motel room, there occurs the small wonder of human understanding and compassion. For George, a. wedding night in a motel room is hardly the romantic dream he might have hoped for. Marriage has come rather late in his life, and not under the happiest circumstances. While he tries to make the best of it, he somehow cannot reach Evelyn who remains steadfastly locked within her silence. Indeed, George has gone to a great deal of trouble to create the right atmosphere, to provide moments of shared warmth and tenderness - but somehow, their situation remains frosted over by a chilling lack of communication. It is only when Evelyn forces herself to break the silence that a small wonder occurs.
