A Bargain Table Cloth

Sally Huffy, a slattern, needs a new table cloth, but her husband, Judson, a much-harassed man, declines to give her the money. He changes his mind, however, after he has spilled a pot of coffee in her lap. From her favorite window, overlooking Molly Hardin's back yard, Sally observes that Molly's table cloth is full of holes, which affords Sally much amusement, but causes Molly to hit her in the face with a piece of wet wash. Hardin, Molly's husband, then gives his wife the price of a new cloth. The women go to the same store, where, unknown to each other, each buys one of the two remaining cloths of the same pattern at reduced price. Unfortunately, Listless Looey, a tramp, steals Sally's cloth, which he sells to a peddler, who, in turn, sells it to Mrs. Doocey, wife of police Sergeant Doocey, the latter being present at the sale. After hunting for the missing cloth, Sally spies Molly hanging hers on the line in Molly's back yard. Believing it to be her own, Sally goes to get it. There is a mix-up, in which Huffy and Hardin join. The police arrest the bunch and bring them before Sergeant Doocey, who is horrified when he sees the cloth, believing it to be his wife's. Looey spies Mrs. Doocey's cloth on the line in her back yard and steals it, hoping to sell it to the peddler again. But Mrs. Doocey gives chase, and the police arrest both Looey and the peddler. They are taken to the station, where Doocey is hearing the Huffy-Hardin case. Matters are explained. The disgusted Doocey throws the cloths at the crowd, ordering them out. Looey is given ten years.
