"Watching this film was difficult for me. I have vivid memories of the fire at Notre Dame's Cathedral. I stopped my day to witness this tragedy, which deeply affected me, even though I'm not French and have never visited the monument. After all, I'm a historian and Catholic: the conservation of spaces like this is important to me, and seeing all of that hurt me deeply. It was like watching the house of a special friend being burned down. Don't expect me to be impartial; I hope you understand. Director Jean-Jacques Annaud envisioned his movie with 5% of it being footage from the actual event, smartphone videos, TV footage, etc. Thus, a year before release, he publicly announced he needed footage for the traffic jams the fire caused, for the spontaneous praying scenes, and for some international TV reports. He even set up a website so that everyone could send their own videos.
