The majority of people believe in life after death, for example in the immortality of the soul or the resurrection of the dead. About 25% believe in reincarnation.Cult and observation sites from the Bronze Age are witnesses that our ancestors already believed in life after death. The question of what form the transformation of the spirit takes after death is now accompanied by research in the field of neuroscience, near-death experiences, reincarnation research, Buddhist belief and regression therapy. The film poses these questions to the Buddhist teacher Ole Nydahl, the psychologist Hans Markowitsch and the reincarnation researcher Dieter Hassler. Will the new insights bring us certainty?

Hans Markowitsch If you approach the subject in an unbiased way, then it seems rather anecdotal. Of course, you are sceptical. It is in the nature of the scientist to try to perceive things objectively and to see them objectively. But on the other hand, objectively seeing also means that you can't get around the fact that this topic is dealt with very similarly in the various reports. And I have suggested a diploma thesis, which was accomplished to the topic near-death experiences. Most of the research, just like in the diploma thesis, is of course epidemiological studies, i.e. you want to know how many people report about such experiences, what stereotype are the statements. Since the 60s - 70s there have been women researchers, like Mrs. Kübler-Ross, who have written books about it. The topic is explained by scientific research as follows: When there is no heartbeat or no corresponding respiration, stress releases many stress hormones and certain transmitters at the brain level. One could speak of adrenaline rush and the like. And that the release of transmitters and hormones at the brain level leads to a stereotypical perception, which is also known from dreams. We know that dreams are always visual. You never hear anything in a dream, but you see colorful images and the same is true of near-death experiences. People report a tunnel at the end of which white light can be seen and that is, if you like, a hyperactivation of the visual cortex caused by the cascade-like multiple release of the messenger substances.
