"In the beginning of the story, Mrs. Barton becomes a widow. The pain of losing her husband is made worse when she is hassled by the adoption agency. After all, with her husband and his salary gone, she's having a tough time of it. So she goes to work...but still finds she cannot make a decent living for her and her daughter to be. When a 'benefactor' offers her a better job, she jumps at it...not realizing she'd be working for a clip joint. Soon, the bartender in this new job slips a customer a mickey...and Mrs. Barton sees this and quits. However, she is accused of working..."
