In the original stage play, written by Michel Marc Bouchard, the action of the play all takes place in one setting, an embalming room at the funeral home, with the four adult Larouche siblings, Chantal (Julien's wife), and a young embalmer who works in the funeral home. Xavier Dolan added the different time periods, characters, and locations in the writing of the adaption.
