Stephen Burrows was invited to participate in a charity event in Paris, it wasn't a proper show or part of Fashion Week; it was a fundraiser to finance necessary repairs on the Palace and he had didn't take the models with him, the black models were all professional models and it was no-one's first time and he had no say in which models were available. The event was the "Battle of Versailles" fashion show, which was competitive PR stunt between French and US designers. Burrows was one of 5 designers from the US, (picked because it was his agent who picked the US competitors and she only chose from her own client list). The US won, but it wasn't Burrows' victory.

The victory affected the fashion world because the US realised they had their own talented designers and stopped looking to Europe for fashion. Without the competition, the world of fashion would be missing some of its biggest stars.
