Japanese American Incarceration

Dr Steph Hinnershitz is currently a Historian with the Institute for the Study of War and Democracy at the National WW2 Museum in New Orleans. She specializes in the American home front during WWII, particularly Japanese American incarceration and civil-military relations. Her book, Japanese American Incarceration: The Camps and Coerced Labor during World War II, is forthcoming with Penn Press in the fall of 2021. Japanese internment camps were established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt through his Executive Order 9066. From 1942 to 1945, it was the policy of the U.S. government that people of Japanese descent, including U.S. citizens, would be incarcerated in isolated camps. In today's show we will be talking about how labor was an important part of this Japanese American incarceration policy for the Army and also the impact of incarceration on civil-military relations during the war.
