Lost Memories of Pirate Pan

An episode to remember

&apos;Peter Pan and the Pirates&apos; very quickly not only became one of my favourite animated shows but also one of my favourites ever. Of all the adaptations of &apos;Peter Pan&apos;, it&apos;s also my personal favourite.

All the characters are not only interesting but remarkably complex, especially Hook, even when not looking like Barrie&apos;s Hook all the character traits of the character are fully explored and expanded upon. The show is advantaged furthermore by good animation (with some exceptions here and there). Great music particularly the theme tune, one of the best of any animated 90s show. Remarkably good writing that had real maturity and a wide range of emotions rare in animated shows today. Gripping and imaginative stories that maintain the spirit of Barrie&apos;s source material while expanding on the themes, events and characterisation. And really excellent voice acting, for one of the most talented voice actors in the business and near-unequalled in villain roles Captain Hook contains some of the best work Tim Curry has ever done.

&quot;Lost Memories of Pirate Pan&quot; is one of the show&apos;s finest examples of a special episode. It is such an imaginative concept that will have fans of the source material delighted and Barrie himself would have been proud most likely. The ideas are so rich and intelligent, as well as remarkably mature and beyond the years of many animated shows today and of its own time. It is though a concept that may be appreciated a little more by older audiences and it is one of those see more than once episodes (though more complicated than some episodes, it isn&apos;t confusing), as an older viewer who has seen the episode many times and is a book fan this was right up my street.

The animation is colourful and rich and loving in detail in regard to both the backgrounds and the effects. The drawing is suitably smooth and nuanced.

Music is a great mix of lively, haunting and lush, the theme tune immediately sticks in one&apos;s head and never leaves it.

Writing is as mature, intelligent and emotionally complex as one would expect with also some funny moments. The story is extremely absorbing and remarkably emotional and deep, adjectives matched properly only by &quot;The Ages of Pan&quot;. 

Characters are spot on, even a less likeable Peter (intentionally considering the concept where he is not meant to be). Loved Jane in particular, very cute and charming and so much more likeable than the Jane in the 2002 Disney sequel &apos;Return to Neverland&apos;. Her touching chemistry with Wendy is one of the episode&apos;s strong points and the episode really does capture the essence of the ending of the book. 

Voice acting can&apos;t be faulted.
