Towards the end, an emotional scene with Kate changes this attitude considerably, but by then, the word that formed while watching, is damning: B-L-A-N-D. That song "Yeah Yeah" something about crossing over, whatever, could not have been a hit in 1996, it would have had a hard time being a hit in 1986, well, 1976, sure.
