During the war, battles would sometimes have two names. This was because the North tended to name battles after landmarks (often rivers or bodies of water), whereas the South named battles after nearby towns. However in the siege at Vicksburg, the battle is only known by the towns namesake, Vicksburg Mississippi which sits on the Mississippi River. The Civil War Sites Advisory Commission (CWSAC) classifies the 384 Civil War battles and confrontations in four distinct categories under the American Battlefield Protection Plan. Class A as distinctive, Class B as Major, Class C Formative and finally Class D as Limited. Vicksburg was classified as A which is a general engagement involving field armies. Additionally, decisive battles had a direct observable impact on the direction, duration, conduct, or outcome of the war which in this case it did as Vicksburg was the last major Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River. ~ BW
