"With the requisite pay-cable (HBO) sex tease of the opening reel, this lavishly-mounted (pun intended) adaptation of Ford Madox Ford's century-ago novels seemed lovely but empty, as stick-figure, antiquated types from the WW I era parade across the screen. Benedict Cumberbatch, sporting a different hairstyle than now, is perfectly cast as a brillianty nerdy right-winger, so stiff that it came as a great pleasure when he falls for the boyish (Carey Mulligan-type) young suffragette played flatly by Adelaide Clemmons (who I have only seen in "The Great Gatsby" with Mulligan).
