After the moderate reception to Diary of the Dead (2007) and Survival of the Dead (2009), George A. Romero sought to return to the original Living Dead series time-line of Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), and Land of the Dead (2005) with Twilight of the Dead, envisioning it as the capstone to the series. Romero had been collaborating with writer Paolo Zelati on a treatment about the world's last human survivors stuck on an island in a zombie-ravaged Earth, but he passed away in 2017. In 2021, Romero's estate, led by his widow Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, revived the project with Zelati and new writers, in order to honor his legacy and complete his vision.
