💡 Did You Know?
In 2017, it was revealed that director Abdellatif Kechiche had decided to split his Mektoub project in two or three movies, which caught his producers (Canal+, Pathé Films and France Télévisions) by surprise as their contract only referred to producing one movie. They thus decided to withdraw their funds for the post-production. Kechiche had to auction off his Palme d'Or to fund the post-production for Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno (2017) and finish the movie, which he eventually presented at the 2017 Venice International Film Festival. With the new funds, he was able to finish post-production on the second opus, Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo (2019), and present it at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, but the music rights issues, the drama at Cannes and the bad reviews prevented him from releasing the second movie and moving forward with this saga for several years. As of December 2025, Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo (2019) has been indefinitely shelved, but he managed to finish and present the third opus, Mektoub, My Love: Canto Due (2025), at the 2025 Locarno Film Festival, and it was released in French theaters in early December 2025, nine years after filming it.
