Could This Be as Much about Now as Then?

Angel Studios is a &quot;Faith-Based&quot; movie production and distributing company. Because I am an AMC A-Lister, and the nearest theater to me (37 minutes door-to-door) has a limited amount of movies to see (I can see up to four movies a week), I was at the end of my movie-rope, so to speak. After seeing three movies at that theater today I saw every movie currently showing there, one of which was distributed by Angel. I understand from the manager that these faith-based films do very well for them box office wise. I may be seeing more, so stay tuned. I will call them like I see them.

I went in open-minded. I thought the story looked interesting, and timely for the environment in America right now. The religious aspect of the movie happened to be Mormon. It is based upon a true story about Helmuth Hübener, who single-handedly found a way to resist the Hitler regime in Germany in 1941. While his church taught him that its members were obligated to obey government authority, Helmuth found that Jesus&apos; witness was that of a revolutionary who taught peaceful resistance to the lies and oppression of a regime like that of Nazism.

I too believe that Jesus would not subscribe to complying with fascism and fear. I am not currently active in any form of Christianity, but I find myself at odds with those who sit in churches and yet support the current regime in America. We are not at 1941-level fascism here yet, but we are on our way. The film has the potential to inspire anyone who claims to follow Jesus to think twice about going along with what is happening here or staying silent.

As a film, it is serviceable. It tells the story. It looks good on screen. The acting is effective. I found Ewan Horrock&apos;s portrayal of Helmuth Hübener compelling. I also thought Rupert Evans did a fine job as Helmuth&apos;s nemesis. I did not find anything about the film to be preachy or prone to proselytism. It is straight forward storytelling about a young man who could not stand for what was happening in his country. I hope some faith-based people who have been coming to see this faith-based film will base their faith on the same faith that Helmuth did. It can only bode well for our resistance to that which Jesus would also protest in America right now. WWJD indeed.
